What is VOCEDplus?

VOCEDplus is a free research database for tertiary education, especially as it relates to workforce needs, skills development, and social inclusion.
It encompasses vocational education and training (VET), higher education, adult and community education, informal learning, and VET in Schools. It is international in scope and contains over 44,000 English language records, many with links to full text documents.

VOCEDplus is produced by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), based in Adelaide, Australia. VOCEDplus is funded by Australian Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments and is endorsed by the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre in Bonn, Germany.

VOCEDplus covers the outcomes of tertiary education in the shape of research, policy, practice, and published statistics. It has extensive coverage of Australian material and includes a wide range of international information.
Each database entry contains standard bibliographic information and an abstract. Entries are predominantly in English and some refer to publications in other languages. We strive to provide full text access via the publisher's website or a digitised copy.

• Now is the time to book in your Library tour. The tours can be adapted for your class and needs, introductory tour, how to use the databases – including the NCC and Australian Standards, how to use the catalogue, to specialised research skill sessions. Your tour can also be combined with the Counselling Units’ Welcome talk.

National Year of Reading 2012

Nearly half the population struggles without the literacy skills to meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work. There are 46% of Australians who can't read newspapers; follow a recipe; make sense of timetables, or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.

Australian libraries and library associations are behind a campaign to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost, with inspirational programs and events taking place across the country.

Libraries will be partnering with government, the media, writers, schools, publishers, booksellers, employers, child care providers, health professionals and a whole host of other organisations that share our passion for reading.

The Dictionary of Sydney is a groundbreaking project to produce a new kind of history of Sydney: online, growing and changing, covering every aspect of human life in this place. Geographically, the Dictionary of Sydney includes the whole Sydney basin and spans the years from the earliest human habitation to the present.
The Dictionary contains new historical writing enriched with other resources – images, maps, sound, music, oral history, film, documents and pointers to important objects in Sydney collections. New material is added regularly, and linked to what is already there.
Contributors include academics, professional historians, heritage specialists, local studies experts, genealogists, enthusiasts, volunteers and readers.

New book @ Miller College Library – D’harawal: seasons and climatic cycles

“When an illustrator met a keeper of indigenous stories, the results blossomed into this publication and an inspiring friendship, a friendship of shared knowledge, insights, stories, illustrations, book, and a calendar poster. This is the first of a series of intended publications aimed at the sharing of knowledge and understanding of D’harawal Country. D’harawal Country and language area extends from the southern shores of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) to the northern shores of the Shoalhaven River, and from the eastern shores of the Wollondilly River system to the eastern seaboard.”

Frances Bodkin is a story teller and knowledge holder of the D’harawal Peoples. In addition to teaching D’harawal language at TAFE in South Western Sydney, Frances works part-time in the education unit at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens teaching D’harawal culture and the environment.

We have two copies of this book, each accompanied with a poster which have been beautifully illustrated by Lorraine Robertson. Find it at 305.89915/BODK.

Did you know that past exam papers are available for students and staff to print or save?

On the student computers in Miller TAFE Library exam papers from 2003 onwards are accessible on the CD Tower. Simply click on CD Tower on the desktop, then TAFE Exams. Mid Year and End Year papers can be viewed by Exam Number or Exam Name.

If you wish to print make sure your TAFEcard is firstly activated and you have money added via the auto loaders (in the Library or Canteen). Please note that some exams are restricted and therefore unavailable.

NEED TO DO QUIET STUDY?

Miller College Library has individual quiet study areas available on the Banks Rd side. Group study rooms can also be booked for small group or private use. Please book at the Service Desk.

There are new interactive Toolboxes available at your library (Series 12). A Toolbox is an interactive e-learning and assessment resource produced by Australian Flexible Learning Framework. They support delivery of recognised training package qualifications for the vocational education and training sector. Resource Description & Access (RDA)

RDA (Resource Description and Access) is the forthcoming revision of Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2 (AACR2). The purpose of RDA is to enable information agencies to create records that are more flexible in meeting users’ needs, and shareable with other metadata communities.

The latest news is that RDA will be published in June 2010. The contents of the RDA Toolkit will be accessible at no charge for everyone to try from the RDA launch date in June 2010 through to August 31, 2010. The open access period will end on August 31, 2010 regardless of the actual launch date.

Specific details on how to register for the free open access period will be announced closer to the launch date. After the open access period ends, a 30 day trial subscription will be offered to users who want to further evaluate the RDA Toolkit before subscribing.

About the Film
In RiP: A remix manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.
The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.
A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle.

TAFE CLIPS: student video competition

Current TAFE NSW students (enrolled at 1 March 2010) are invited to enter the TAFE Clips Student Video Competition.

Get creative and produce your own video featuring snapshots of students and showcasing TAFE NSW’s diversity and facilities.

Prizes for 1st place ($500), 2nd place ($300) and 3rd place ($200) will be awarded in each category. A certificate will also be awarded to each finalist.

Selected videos will be featured on the new TAFE NSW website when it is launched (expected June 2010).

Set up an RSS feed to our New Items list, currently available from TAFEcat, and will be updated at the beginning of every month.

What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) offers an easy way to be alerted when new content appears on a particular website without having to go to the site itself. RSS-enabled sites have files called "RSS feeds" that describe the latest updates to the site. Each item in the RSS feed contains a title, some descriptive content, and a URL that links back to the original content or website for more information.

RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web based, desktop based or mobile based. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds. A variety of free and commercial RSS readers are available. Internet browsers, such as IE7 and Firefox have integrated feed readers and Outlook 2007 can also be used.

Art and Architecture Complete
Provides full-text coverage and cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for nearly 730 academic journals, magazines and trade publications, plus selective coverage for more than 70 additional publications and an image collection of over 64,000 images provided by Picture Desk and others. This database covers a wide variety of pertinent subjects, including antiques, art and art history, interior and landscape design, and much more.

Library database trials are commencing today for the PlantFile and ProQuest series of online databases.

PlantFile Online contains detailed information on more than 2700 plants, 15,000+ images of plants, insects & diseases and is searchable by plant name ie common or botanical and key features.

ProQuest 5000 is an extensive general reference resource providing access to over 10,200 publications, with more than 6,020 of those in full text. What is Internet Detective?

Internet Detective is a free online tutorial designed to help students develop their Internet research skills. The tutorial looks at the critical thinking required when using the Internet for research and offers practical advice on evaluating the quality of web sites.
The tutorial is specifically designed to help university and college students to develop skills that will help them use the Internet more effectively to support their research for coursework and assignments.
It takes around an hour to complete the tutorial, though the advantage of an online tutorial is that students can go over the material as often as they wish, practice their skills and test their understanding. It can easily be embedded into taught courses, Web pages and VLEs and is freely available in two formats; a Web version and a downloadable version for use in Virtual learning Environments (VLEs).

ANZAC Day and the National Archives of Australia

The National Archives keeps valuable records of the Australian Government and makes them available to the public, now and in the future.
The records in their collection trace the events and decisions that shaped the nation.
What is it about?

Their records include papers of Governors-General, Prime Ministers and Ministers. They have Cabinet documents, Royal Commission files and departmental records on defence, immigration, security and intelligence, naturalisation and many other issues.
When were the records made?

The focus of their collection is records created since the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. They also have some 19th century records relating to functions that were transferred by the colonies to the Australian government, including shipping and post offices.
As well as caring for our collection, the National Archives makes the records accessible to all Australians.

Over the vacation break the library was re carpeted and along with new air conditioning, Smart e Board equipped seminar rooms, enhanced display areas and signage, now provides an even more comfortable and supportive environment for you whilst studying/teaching at the college. As usual we will be conducting a range of library information and orientation sessions and look forward to assisting you further this year.

An expanded range of print, audio visual and e resources are available for access and loan. Specific details of new acquisitions can be obtained from the use of the “New items” link on the library catalogue.

Recarpeting the college library

The College Library will be recarpeted from Monday 8 December. On that day and Tuesday 9 December there will be limited access to the Library for students and staff. Access will be to reading and PC areas only. The Library will be closed from Wednesday 10 December until Friday 23 January for recarpeting, stocktake, a professional development day and staff annual leave.

Alternative student access to PCs is available in M:1.59 – thanks to Business Administration from 10 to 19 December 2008.

If possible, all student loans should be returned by the 5th December .

Employment Expo and Open Day, at Miller College - Thursday 11 September 2008. The Day aims to provide young and unemployed people with opportunities to explore the various avenues open to them in the transition to employment.

TV News… indexes Australian television news, current affairs and selected documentaries from the free-to-air networks with links to the digitised video content in a compressed format.

All individual stories from a particular broadcast are indexed with a detailed synopsis. TVNews is updated daily

Grove Art Online … provides the ability to access and search the vast content of Grove Art Online and Oxford art reference in one location. Users can choose to view biographies, subject entries, or images when searching or browsing.

This functionality allows users greater access to the more than 23,000 subject entries, 21,000 biographies, 500,000 bibliographic citations, 40,000 image links and 5,000 images contained within Grove Art On

New eLearning equipment

The Library now has the Senteo interactive response system, Visualisers and Wireless Slates and Laptops available for staff to borrow – the wireless slates and visualisers work with or without the Smartboard.

Utilise the skills and knowledge of the Institute e-learning Mentors for e-learning/innovative delivery as well as your Teaching & Learning Managers. Contact the library for further details. Quick reference guides and manuals are also available for use with the equipment.

First semester has rushed by and we are almost at the end of the term. Don’t forget to renew your Library items over the vacation period. All loans will continue as usual over the vacation, so if an item falls due during the vacation period, it is your responsibility to renew it by the due date. Don’t risk a fine of ten dollar per item by not renewing your items on time.

Toolboxes @ your Library

There are new interactive Toolboxes available at your library (Series 10). Toolboxes are designed to support the delivery of vocational education and training. They have been designed to be used by training providers and industry to assist in the delivery of job training. There are many Toolboxes available from the latest and past series that cover a diverse range of educational and industry areas, some of which include:

· BuildRight (10.01) – addresses mandatory units within Cert IV Building and Construction
· Central water (10.02) – activities and resources incl. hazard identification, environmental risks, PPE etc
· eCommerce (906) – covers 9 core units, seven specialist units and three electives
· Fabrication – specialising in general and heavy fabrication engineering

Want to know what’s new in the TAFE libraries – across the state, institute or locally? Try using the online catalogue New items Tab and then filter by institute or college. Utilising this capability plus the Inter library Loans service can dramatically expand the range of resources available for use in classrooms or lesson preparation.

Individual section ‘New title services’ are now being sent out that highlight recently purchased Miller library material. The Library staff are attempting to update our distribution lists to include staff new to the college. If you fall into this category please advise the library to ensure that you receive future notifications.

As we begin the new teaching year, just a refresher on a few things on offer at your library-aside from new air conditioning.

We have an expanded range of databases available for information whenever and wherever you want. Access is available online through the SWSI library website.

Don’t forget that you can renew library items online through the SWSI website and the library catalogue. This way you can avoid the hassle of overdues! Contact the library for a pin number.

Library orientation tours of your library are available for classes. These tours give a valuable overview of what the library has to offer to all students. To book your class in please contact Graham Mundy 9825 7416.

Extra databases and some visual search options

An additional five full text databases from the provider Ebsco, are now available for use by staff and students in the institute. Access is available across the state via the library web site database page or the library catalogue e resources tab on a 24/7 basis.

Of particularly interest from a Miller perspective are these products:
Computer and Applied Sciences Complete - covering the research and development spectrum of the computing and applied sciences disciplines.
Business Source Premier - providing full text for more than 2,300 journals, including over a 1000 peer-reviewed titles. Covers all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance and economics.

As well there are now Visual search options included in the latest range of Ebsco databases - which allow you to search efficiently across broad subjects and have your results returned as a visual map, organised by topic (see image).

Collection spotlight -Groove to the music:

Ever wanted to write or record a hit song, travel the world and listen to the varied sounds of world music, tune the guitar or view videos on rise of pop music in Australia?

Go no further than M block. The library, in support of the Music Foundation course has recently been expanding its holdings in this area and has a wide range of specific music, print and audio visual material for loan.

Interactive Ochre

The ANTA toolbox 907 resource Interactive Ochre is available for ‘free’ download, viewing, or use by TAFE staff via the TALe web site. The product should eventually end up on the SWSI online server with other toolboxes that have been placed there by the institute Flexible Learning Coordinator.

The product may be access from the TALe web site via the SWSI intranet ‘useful links option’ select TALe>search teacher resources>login via the DET staff portal>guided search option for TAFE and VET>Flexible learning Toolboxes-currently available Toolboxes on TALe>Series 9> 907.

Census 2006 - Discover your community: who are we and how we have changed

In conjunction with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Miller along with other libraries in the institute has partnered to promote the first release of the latest census data.

A new look to part of the ABS web site enables enquirers to quickly find information via the ‘Quick stats , Census tables and Map stats’ options
(egg Liverpool LGA ) and includes the ability to browse by location or topic.

An information pack containing CDs, posters and related printed information is available in the library.

Other useful library online resources for regional and community information are:
• Local community links -which includes a community services directory for all of NSW and references to other sites that cover Greater Western Sydney and provide industry, population and economic data.
• 80/20 a library subscription statistical database that targets existing census data for business and marketing purposes

Library system changeover -UNICORN

From 2 July 2007 TAFE libraries across the state will be swapping to a completely new and quite different library system, called UNICORN.

There will be a number of benefits as a result of the changeover (e.g. online renewals, more advanced search options, easier viewing of new title acquisitions etc) for users.

As students learn how to master traditional hand skills, complete projects involving practical building tasks or develop other competencies and techniques associated with work in this rapidly expanding industry - the library’s diverse range of resources on this subject are readily available and represent a unique part of our collection.

Formats include both print, magazine, audio visual and CD ROM/DVD based material as well as an interactive web guide.

The password of power ?

“one password to open them, one password to find them all” …apologies to J.R.R.Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings)

In previous years students and staff attempting to use the library’s 24/7 full text databases from home or in the college, needed to log in a number of times if they wanted to utilise the full suite of database options.

No longer. As part of the 2007 range of improvements to the library’s online services, access to all the databases from our web site have been reconfigured to allow for a common login. Once through the secure page, staff and students can gain direct access to the search interfaces up to 10 general and specialist products, ranging from the Australian Standards, through to the Australian and New Zealand Reference Centre (ANZRC).

Contact with the library should be made to obtain the current 2007 passwords. Staff will be readily available between 12-3.00pm to give onsite demonstrations (in the library or sections) throughout the remainder of the semester. Outside of this please ring on 02 9825 7416 or 9825 7414 to schedule a more convenient time.

Haven’t had a chance to look at the latest resources received by the library or just new to teaching at Miller and want to catch up with what the library can offer by way of newly released or purchased resources.

Try using the 2006 -2007 new title listings which are now archived and available online through the library web site e - Reserve function. These selectively highlight valuable material that can support your lesson preparation and delivery.

They link to related material in the state wide TAFE library catalogue and selected web sites. Copies are normally sent out electronically, direct to the sections on a monthly and or quarterly basis.

Library recycling: a new way with space

The library has recently commissioned a new group learning area within the main body of the library which will allow for more varied learning and study activities by students and staff.This complements other specialized spots such as the Language and Literacy (Child Studies) corner and the seminar /group study rooms etc. Some of these rooms also have a network port and as such are capable of tapping into the internet or college drives.

There are 10 individual PC work stations in the new area and the capacity for data projection, plus group seating for 6, 3 individual study carrels, some lounge chairs and resource shelving that can be tailored for theme or topic, book and AV displays . One PC is on a dual staff/student build and staff can log in and access U drive folders etc.
